Photojournalism intern, August 1999 - February 2000
In addition to taking on the duties of a staff photographer, I updated the paper's remote transition capacities, transmitted from locations throughout the region, assisted with updating the studio facilities, trained the staff in the use of the Nikon D1, installed the hardware/software neccessary to use the D1, and occasionally designed picture pages.

Daily Press (94,000 circulation daily) Newport News, VA

Ten week internship in the Hampton Roads section of Virginia. Used the internship to work on feature photography, but also did a variety of assignments.

The Tribune-Review (125,000 circulation daily) Greensburg & Pittsburgh, PA

Spilt the internship between the Pittsburgh edition and the Greensburg edition of the paper. Because of this arrangement, the types and locations of assignments varied from urban to rural environments. Learned a great deal about the workings of a daily newspaper. Worked the picture desk occasionally, and improved my digital darkroom skills.

Freelance photographer December 1995 - January, 1998 (whenever home)
Shot about 5 times per week during the summer, and averaged about 2 assignments per day during the winter. Have done a variety of work including general news, spot news, features and sports.

Shot 2-3 times per week. Assignments were primarily covering community news events. I also shot a large amount of spot news.

College experience

The Student Voice (5,500 circulation weekly) Syracuse, NY
Editor in Chief, May 1998 - February, 1999; Managing Editor, April 1997 - May, 1998
Was responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of a weekly publication with a $35,000 annual budget. Facilitated communication between departments and generated both written and photographic story ideas. Edited all aspects of two special sections and designed eight special sections. Was responsible for the majority of the design work in each issue. Oversaw a total redesign of the paper's graphic appearance and story content. During my tenure, the newspaper won over two dozen awards from national, regional and state journalism associations, including first place for best overall use of photography in the 1998 Student Society of News Design competition.
